Murfreesboro is Rutherford County’s county seat that has a population of 152,769 in the 2020 census. The city is situated in the Nashville metropolitan area of Middle Tennessee. It was the former capital of the state between 1818 and 1826 before it was replaced by Nashville. It is the largest district in Nashville and is Tennessee’s sixth-largest city.
Murfreesboro took its name from the late Revolutionary War hero Colonel Hardy Murfree on November 29, 1811. In January 1812, the city was formally chartered, and its name was shortened from Murfreesborough to Murfreesboro. Today, the city is considered the fastest-growing major city in Tennessee and one of the fastest in the country. Tennessee’s largest undergraduate university, which is Middle Tennessee State University, can be found here, too.

Found on the National Register of Historic Places popular for its unique 19th-century style of architecture. It was also called the “Oakland Mansion,” which served as a shelter for Confederate and Union officers during the Civil War. The museum was restored by a group of women that protested to create the Oaklands Association and was opened to the public in the 1960s as a museum.
